Around 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Law enforcement state they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a individual observed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then discovered multiple other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state preliminary tests suggest the substance was probably human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its source; officials are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
Local authorities announced they were working "to resolve the case" and have requested to the community for information.
A senior official said the incident rendered him speechless and had to be solved quickly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on social media, referring to the death of nine people by a shooter targeting people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
