"Any idea when you're interviewing the band?" a text pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the ultimate honor. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage people to start a band."

Grammy Recognition

The band have called into their homes, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the accolade is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant achievement," continues Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the female artists that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Candor

The album emerged from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that unique transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The words follow endings and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they aspire to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That recent resilience required a fresh approach – more organic and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drums.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's openness shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic horror stories.

Someone broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Legacy

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an global audience.

However the sister act will consistently be their number one priority.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "There is no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
