Earth could be facing challenges, but optimism persists. A new award originating at the science, music and arts festival the Starmus festival will motivate the public to take action.

This new Earth medal bearing Jane Goodall's name will honor to pay tribute to the renowned British primatologist who passed away recently. It is designed to celebrate those who champion the natural world.

The Medal's Framework

Initial honorees are expected to be announced during the Starmus VIII festival in Tenerife and La Palma, scheduled from 17–22 October the coming year.

It was shared that Goodall, who was a member of the festival's board, had backed the award’s creation. “The vision behind this medal, and the festival being tasked to oversee it, is Jane’s,” a representative said. “Her desire was that she wanted for this to occur. This is likely because of the very special connection she had with us.”

“This medal will acknowledge sustainable programmes undertaken to build an environment improved for people, animals and the environment and provide encouragement to carry on that work,” commented a relative.

Structure and Vision

One of the founders of the festival noted that the medal – which was announced at a prestigious venue – will likely have multiple categories.

“It’s going to be very much similar to the Stephen Hawking medal for science communication that we created exactly 10 years ago,” it was explained. Jane Goodall herself received of that very medal.

Sharing thoughts on the outlook of the planet, a prominent voice remarked, “Frankly, it is difficult to maintain optimism. Present governance globally is conducting an assault on knowledge. So this really cripples global initiatives.”

“In truth, the prospects aren't particularly bright so we have to commence thinking again, with greater urgency about the consequences of human activity. This concern encompasses not only global warming, that’s the entire manner in which we interact with our environment.”

Following an Example

Therefore, observers believe it was a good time to emulate her guiding principles. “I think that when we’re awarding the prize, the focus will be on this core philosophy that Jane embodied – which made her foremost concern, to transform how we regard the other animals with which we share the planet.”

A major topic at present is the proliferation of misinformation. The central topic of the upcoming festival will be “the search for truth”.

“There is a recognition that factual reality is becoming a matter of debate when politics are involved. This is a very dangerous thing,” he commented. “Climate research is a science; it is impossible to allow interference from politics in this field.”

The goal is that the medal will inspire action. “It’s about encouraging people to engage and to show concern and to work toward these goals, really. Whether or not we feel hopeful, we have to look at working our utmost,” a statement concluded. “Accept the possibility of setbacks, but you still continue striving to achieve positive outcomes.”

A family member involved in environmental protection shared optimism that “given direction and once enabled, humans are capable of being responsible caretakers of Earth”, pointing to the work of an institute that, among its other activities, assists the next generation become engaged with their community, wildlife, and environment.

“As my late grandmother often reminded us, the choices we make each day are significant and the responsibility lies with us the kind of difference we make,” it was stated. “We still have an opportunity and this medal will give encouragement and increase understanding about the positive actions currently in progress.”
