Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at both ends of pitch

Following a drab midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted just one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having space and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup match against the Magpies.
