At least thirteen people perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.

The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
